Dr. Mary Crowther Recognized for Excellence in Women's Healthcare
Representing Arlington Women's Center, Dr. Mary Crowther joins Cambridge Who's Who

ARLINGTON, VA, June 10, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Mary Crowther, Assistant Professor in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Arlington Women's Center, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in all aspects of women's healthcare.

As assistant professor of clinical obstetrics and gynecology at Georgetown University Hospital, Dr. Crowther specializes in the management of high-risk obstetrics with a special interest in women who have previously suffered a stillbirth or neonatal death, and the management of women with abnormal Pap smears, pelvic masses and gynecological malignancies. She is responsible for working part-time in the Residents' Clinic at Virginia Hospital Center and also in the Arlington Womens' Center and divides her time between surgery, teaching, seeing patients and delivering babies. In the 1980s, Dr. Crowther was a lecturer in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of London and St. Bartholemew's Medical College, and did a Gynocological Oncology Fellowship at St. Bartholomew's Hospital. She studied Medicine in Australia and went to London in 1975 where she did residencies at Queen Charlotte's Hospital and St. Bartholomew's Hospital. She wrote her MD Thesis (PH.D. equivalent) on the Immunology of Ovarian Cancer, and has published various articles on the subject, as well as performed research on women who suffer stillbirths. She is a member of the Royal Society of Medicine, and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of the UK. In 2008, she was awarded a CREOG/National Faculty Award for Excellence in Resident Education. She believes in the importance of midwives in caring for pregnant women and the birth process. Every November, she visits Honduras with the Virginia Hospital Center Medical Brigade, to deliver health care to the underprivileged of Honduras. She studied medicine in Australia where she made her first rotation in obstetrics, and she enjoyed having a career delivering babies and helping women of all ages. She attributes her success to the ethical standards instilled in her by her parents, her service to the community, putting others before her and to her hard work.

Dr. Crowther completed her residency at Georgetown University in 2001 and received her Ph.D. in Immunology with a concentration in Ovarian Cancer, her Bachelor of Medicine and her Bachelor of Surgery in Australia. Because her husband is American, she came to America in 1996 and completed another Residency at Georgetown in 2005. She also completed training in obstetrics and gynecology at Queen Charlotte's & Chelsea Hospital in London in 1974. A member of the World Society of Medicine in England, she is affiliated with the World College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Crowther is the recipient of a National Faculty Award from the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
