Velma McInnis Edmonds Received Research Grants from NIH and HRSA

EL PASO, TX, December 8, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Velma McInnis Edmonds, Assistant Clinical Professor in the School of Nursing at The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in nursing education.

A respected authority on adult healthcare, Velma McInnis Edmonds brings 40 years of professional experience to UTEP. She is Assistant Dean for Student Affairs and the Director of Infection Control Center at the School of Nursing where, in addition to teaching classes, didactically and clinically, she is continuing her program of research. She also delivers lectures and presentations at various venues around the world. Dr. Edmonds has won grants from both the National Institutes of Health and the Health Resources and Services Administration. Her focus of research is healthcare disparities. In the recent past, she has been the Principal Investigator on research in nutrition and health and illness beliefs and behaviors with recently immigrated Honduran women in New Orleans, and she replicated it with recently immigrated Mexican women on the US-Mexico border. She was Project Director of a HRSA grant, "Recruitment and Retention of Disadvantaged Hispanic Nursing Students." At present, she is focusing her research on air quality and hospital admissions of children with asthma on the US-Mexico border.

Before coming to UTEP Dr. Edmonds was a consultant in nursing education to The University of Guam School of Nursing. She also taught nursing at The Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center at New Orleans where, in addition to teaching, she did international healthcare interventions and transcultural nursing in Costa Rica, Honduras and Guatemala. She developed her expertise in international health at Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine at New Orleans. Prior to going to New Orleans, she was the director of the RN-BSN nursing program at Northwestern State University School of Nursing in Louisiana. In addition to teaching, Dr. Edmonds has maintained her clinical skills via working clinically during the weekends. She attributes her success to her diligence and passion for her profession.

Ms. Edmonds received her Diploma in Nursing from Charity Hospital School of Nursing at New Orleans; Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from The Medical College of Georgia; Master of Science Degree in Nursing from The University of Alabama at Birmingham; and her Doctor of Nursing Science Degree from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center at New Orleans. Her professional affiliations include the American Nurses Association, the Transcultural Nursing Association, Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society for Nursing, the Society for Nutrition Educators, and the Military Child Education Coalition.
