Caroline Jetton Plans a Sabbatical to Enhance her Expertise in Music Education
After serving as dean of DePauw University's School of Music for four years, Dr. Jetton prepares to return to the classroom
GREENCASTLE, IN, June 30, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Caroline Jetton, Ed.D., Associate Professor of Music, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for her dedication, leadership and excellence in music education.
Growing up, Dr. Jetton dreamed of becoming an educator. Upon graduating from high school, she fused her desire to teach with her passion for music and began developing the foundation that led to her successes over the last 23 years. She earned a Bachelor of Music Education from Murray State University in 1988, a Master of Music from the University of Memphis in 1992, and an Ed.D. in music education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1996.
Four years ago, Dr. Jetton was appointed the dean of the school of music at DePauw University. She plans to resume teaching in the fall of 2012, and in preparation, she will spend the 2011-12 academic year on a sabbatical leave from the university. "I need to reflect upon my teaching, become familiar with current texts and resources, and refresh my memory regarding the capabilities, behaviors, and interests of children and adolescents of all ages and abilities," she says, adding that she also plans to visit the music classrooms of several public schools in central Indiana as part of her project. During her sabbatical, she will develop a new course and revise other courses in the music education curriculum using the knowledge she gains from her research, reflection, and observations in the public schools. For instance, "Music for Students with Diverse Needs" will be expanded to a one-credit course by incorporating content from "Multicultural Education," a course that will be removed from the roster of University courses.
Additionally, Dr. Jetton has been selected as a member of two delegations that will be traveling internationally this year. She will be traveling with education colleagues from across the country to Beijing and Guiyang, China, to engage in meetings with education professionals and study various aspects of the Chinese education system, including curriculum development, reform policies and initiatives, professional development, student achievement and technology. The group will be traveling with Dr. Gene Carter, the executive director and chief executive officer of ASCD.
Dr. Jetton will also be visiting Brazil as a member of the Music Education Delegation to gain a better understanding of the music education system in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. The delegation plans to explore the similarities and differences between music education in Brazil and in the United States. The opportunities presented via her participation in the Music Education Delegation will be beneficial in preparing Dr. Jetton for her return to teaching and will also help shape her work on to the university's music education curriculum. "Given that my education and teaching responsibilities are in music education, this opportunity is extremely fitting," states Dr. Jetton, who is excited about her educational trips abroad. She adds, "[I look forward to] enhancing and extending my knowledge, becoming current in the field and with pedagogy, informing my teaching, gleaning new ideas and strategies for introducing content to college students, and improving the overall quality of instruction in my courses."
Dr. Jetton is a member of the Indiana Music Educators Association Board of Directors, chair of the Indiana chapter of the Society of Music Teacher Education, and the North Central Division chair of the Music Teacher Education Special Research Interest Group. She is also professionally affiliated with Music Educators National Conference, College Music Society, Phi Delta Kappa, ASCD, American Orff-Schulwerk Association, and Organization of American Kodaly Education.
